Serkan Sürek was born in izmir in 1973 where he went to school before studying geography at Ankara University. He graduated in 1997 and moved to Northern Cyprus. He is married with one daughter and has worked here as a geography teacher for 13 years.
He began sketching caricatures as a child and was first published in a Turkish regional newspaper, Yeni Asır. His work has also appeared in Kıbrıs, Halkın Sesi , Havadis ,Yeniduzen newspapers at Northern Cyprus.
His first joint exhibition, with fellow cartoonists Dr Arif Albayrak and Cemal Tunceri, was held at a ‘No to War’ Youth Festival on 9th May in 2009. His work also appeared in the Tuesday edition of Yeni Düzen newspaper, on Dr Filiz Besim’s page. He is a member of the Turkish Cypriot Cartoonist’s Association and takes part in national and international cartoon competitions.
His first solo exhibition, at the Eaved House, Nicosia, ran from December 14-18 2009.
